A Merry Heart

I remember many years ago before I let Jesus into my heart, when He knocked at the door, I did not have a clue what life was about. I remember working with a newly married guy. He came to work one morning and he says to me, being quite frustrated, and I was an older person than him, being married a while, “can I have some advice.” While I think of it now, I did not have any concerning marriage! Apparently he had got up in the morning and he was quite a positive guy, and he thought it was a great day, and he told me that he said out loud, “Good morning!” And his wife said, “what is good about it?” He was upset all day about that. He was a cheerful, happy-go-lucky type of a fella. He was always saying, “this is a great day” and his wife would be upset with him and say “what is so great about it?” Even though I had been married a few years more than him, I was not an expert! But, knowing what I know today, unless we know how much the Lord loves us and the sacrifice He did for us at the Cross, we really cannot view too well many of life’s situations. I have come to find out that Jesus talked about this a lot! One place is where it is said “In (the midst of) everything give thanks, for this is the will of God concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:18.

“In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God concerning you”. Notice here, that this scripture speaks about God’s will in our lives – many of us have questions, what is God’s will for our lives?” It is quite simple, it starts right there in that scripture.

Another good word is “A merry heart does good like a medicine.” Prov.17:22.

And this one… “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Prov.15:13.

We can understand from that that God speaks about the heart a lot. So it is not a little thing when we say Jesus is standing at the Door of our Heart and to let Him in! Because life is in the heart! All life springs out of the heart. Once that is right, I find that life is much easier.

After 47 years of experiencing some of these benefits and having seen other people experiencing the same life, I come to the conclusion that the indwelling Spirit of God is a major key to a cheerful heart in my life. The key for me has been in these 47 years has been the presence of the Spirit of God in my heart.

As He knocks on the door of your heart at this moment, let Him in and I believe together with you, that the peace and mercies and blessings of the Lord will strengthen you and encourage you as you enjoy His purpose and will in your lives!

We love you. God bless you. God loves you very, very much.

The Deliverer

Many of us parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friends agonize, have sleepless nights, and worry and search for answers over the fact that some of our loved ones have been caught up in addictions, homelessness, depression, and other desolations. We struggle to assist them in whatever ways we can, and using all our human forces and strength, and our prayers, that they would get off the addictions that they are caught up into. It could be sexual, drugs, alcohol, anything that our loved ones are caught up in and cannot find deliverance, healing and freedom from all these shackles that torture their minds and bodies. We genuinely pray (as we should and it is good) as we bring all our efforts towards getting rid of these problems for them, and we do everything we possibly can for them, sacrifice, spending our human efforts, money, support, detox, yet we can find nothing seems to work. It is not that it is wrong what we do for them, it is that they have not yet met the true Deliverer face to face! Well, the answer is in this story about a very, very troubled man in Mark 5. Jesus appeared to him, and He revealed Himself. The man met Jesus face to face and the Deliverer was revealed to him!

Here we see what happened to one person who no human could help – but Jesus did…

Mark 5: They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

I believe that the most important thing we have to do as loved ones is TRUST the Deliverer. While we trust, we can rest, and have hope. I read somewhere that while we sleep, God works, but while we work, He sleeps! That is to say that we can trust Him and be at peace with Him. After all, He is the Prince of Peace. And the scripture also says that He brings us the Peace that passes ALL understanding.

So today, as Jesus knocks at the door of our hearts, let Him in! Trust Him and enjoy Him. He will accomplish what He promises!

We love you and God loves you very, very much!

March 10, 1970

I was 39 years old. I had finished building a new house, living in there with my wife and three little kids. I had lots of work and was doing well, but was totally unhappy and dissatisfied with life. I had quit drinking six years earlier, cold turkey, no more drinking because it was my addiction. That had not solved anything though; I was still angry, fearful, dissatisfied, and wondering what life was all about. And on that very day, March 10, 1970, in the morning, I was at work in Burnaby. I remember I was sitting down on a coffee break, and while having a cigarette and coffee, God was starting to stir me up! It was a little voice that was gentle, just over on one side of my shoulder, and it said “Give everything up and follow me” like your fears and anxieties, but, over on the other shoulder a little voice said “Don’t do that… your whole family, friends, in-laws, parents, would say you are going crazy now.” And then again on the right hand side, the voice said, “No, just follow me and I will give you rest and peace about all this.” Then I sort of thought, ok, but How? Who? I had been around in different religions, listening, trying to be good, and I hated it!!! I felt angry about it all and dissatisfied. I thought that Jesus Christ was a good swear word and a good hippie, who had done a few “tricks” like walking on water, etc. 2000 years ago. But I could not believe that He was God!

So later that day after watching the news at supper time, who comes on TV but Billy Graham! Back then, #1, we had heard at a young age that we weren’t allowed to watch him! Anyway, he made a claim that did not make sense. He said that Jesus Christ is fully God, fully man, who came to earth to redeem us and show us the way! Then Billy went on and invited us to kneel down in front of the television, saying, “If He is knocking at the door of your heart, open the door and let Him in!” At that stage I thought, I have done a lot of foolish things in my life; I might as well try this!

You know what? Answering His knock at the door of my heart and letting Him in was the key to everything! There was no big bang or anything, but a Great Peace started to invade me! This might be hard to believe, but I began to see things differently! I think I was looking through a different lens, towards my wife, my kids, my work, eternity, and it was Forward-Looking!! Now I gotta say this, there has been a lot of living since then. And it has been good. I have a friend in Jesus, which the Bible says in Hebrews 1:3 – “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” He is the perfect God as our Father. Well, He changed my life completely, to this day.

The Bible says when you do that, you become a new creation in Him! My personal relationship with Jesus from that day on, is what sustains me, keeps me and has blessed me not just talking about material things, but with my life, family, friends, it is never ending. It is eternal! I am 86 now. Many times we fail, and I did not become a monk! No need for that! Because when Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood for us, it washes away our sins, past, present and future! And Jesus has never left me, and faithful during every step of my life. I see where He was faithful to me even BEFORE that experience that day… and that is because God is love, we are created in His image, and He loves us REGARDLESS! We are chosen before creation!! But then, I guess like it says in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” – the Abundance part is for here now on this planet! And today is my 47th Anniversary! I cannot forget it!

It sounds like He is always knocking at the door of our hearts. Let Him in, talk with Him, enjoy Him! He will tell you how things are done… He has got lots of good promises and a lot of insights and wisdom. He loves you very, very much!!!

The Gospel of Hope!

In the early 1970s I had a contract in South Surrey to work on a project finishing inside houses; it was a 30 house plan. When I was working on that project, there were two brothers I worked for who were the owners of the company. One was keeping the books in the office, and the older brother was the project manager. The project manager was in his early 50s. He was always on the project, no matter what time of day you were there; he would direct you to park your truck over here, or unload your material over there. He was very attentive and smart. He and his wife had a nice family of four teenaged kids. I came to work one morning on the job and it was very, very quiet there, because he was usually in the middle of the road directing you! There were police cars around his house. Anyway, I found out through the office that in the middle of the night, he had died of a heart attack. He was a nice guy and I got along good with him. I went to his funeral in a funeral home somewhere, and the preacher or speaker, got up and gave a talk for 45 minutes. The widow and the four kids were sitting in the front row, and other family members and friends were there. It was painful and depressing. The speaker never offered any hope or encouragement. So I left, shaking my head. Even the bricklayer I was walking with back to our cars, said to me, “What was that all about?” To this day, I wonder about those teenagers and the widow; I never heard anymore. I felt for them; there was no message of hope. I know one thing, that teenagers are open to hearing something new or fresh! But that did not happen there that day.

The answer to hopelessness is in the simple Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now the Gospel is very simple: Jesus came, He died, and He rose from the dead. He shed His blood, which erases our sins, past, present and future. Romans 10:9 says: “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;”

Believe on Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved. That is the Doorway to Heaven.

And John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

And there are many more good comforting words…

The answer to hopelessness has always been and will always be that a Saviour came for us, easily available, simply believe. No hard works involved. He has done it all.

So that is why we feel free today to share the Good News – there is always someone who may enjoy it and receive it!

We will never know the whole situation of that incident that day, but one thing we know for sure that the Gospel when it is shared and accepted, is a Gospel of Hope and promises, direction, and encouragement and comfort for our lives and eternally.

So today, when Jesus knocks at the door of your heart, let Him in and enjoy Him!

God loves you, very, very, very much!

That Ol’ Mustard Seed!

When I grew up, and all my life, I always loved hearing stories! From people, from books, from anywhere. I liked telling stories too! One thing I discovered when I first started reading my Bible was that Jesus loved to do that too – as a matter of fact, He gave so many parables to explain things – man, they really made sense to me… One parable that Jesus used, in Matthew 17:20, was this: Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Now apparently a mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds around and it can grow anywhere – it can grow under rocks, under water, and apparently mustard seed can grow in Israel up to 16 feet high!! You can ride underneath it on horseback!
Now Jesus was not talking about the size of the mustard seed – he was talking about the energy and the power IN the mustard seed. He likened it to faith! So it is not how MUCH faith we have, it is faith in Who?? And our faith is in Jesus!
When we first have a revelation about following God in our lives, we begin to trust Him and believe in Him; that means we are walking in faith, just trusting Him! But, many times we have had faith and it didn’t work….
A guy that knows me met up with us at the mall one day, and he knows I am from the “religious” side of things, and I had coffee with him. And he said to me, “Listen Henry, I want to talk to you a bit.” He told me that when he was younger, he had tried “this religion thing.” He had gone to university and he really found what made sense to him, because this religion thing didn’t make sense to him. He said that the thing that really made sense to him that he discovered in university, was math! And my friend said, “With math, you end up with solutions, while in the religion end there is no logic.” He is right, math is so important for the world! I agreed with him! So after he told me all this, he shared with me that he was having major problems in his business, that he could not cope with or handle anymore. It was not working out for him at all. And since the fellow was not a believer at all, I was quite a bit hesitant to tackle him with my “religious” ideas. Finally after a few drinks of coffee, I just said to him, “Can I pray for you?” and he agreed! He said I guess it won’t hurt! Well, I tell you, by that time, my own faith was way, way, WAAAAYY smaller than a mustard seed! And my prayer was not very long and not very exciting! I just asked Jesus to meet his needs.
About a month later, he ran into me. He grabbed me by the arm and shook my hand and said “You will not believe this!” What really happened was God fixed that business problem he had like no one else could fix it! Apparently even a stranger came in from another province and got right into it to help solve his problem! He was so overjoyed, relieved, and thankful!! And couldn’t stop shaking my hand!
Now when my first wife Betty died, we were so devastated, we cried, we prayed, we wanted God to let her live. There were prayer chains going around the world which we really appreciated! Some were fasting, others lighting candles, all trying to help us. But in the end, she died, and we were crushed. But, now, the thing with it all, is God knows everything, beginning to the end, and what is the best for us, so we should never stop trusting Him! No matter what happens, we should never walk simply by sight, but by faith, trusting, believing He who delivered us and gives us eternal life! How he answers us does not change our faith in Him. Father knows best!
Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Many of us can feel like, well I do trust Jesus but my faith is so little – Remember though… it doesn’t matter the size of the seed, it is what is behind it – and it is the Power of Jesus! Faith and just trusting in Him…
Our blessed assurance we have in pleasing God, is having faith, trusting Him for what He said, what He promised and what He is doing! That is all we have to do to please God, nothing else – Faith in Him, the Son of God, who said “The Father and I are one; if you have seen me, you have seen the Father!” And He also says “I have come that you may have life and life abundant” which means eternal life in the end of things, plus abundant life now on earth!
What a merciful, gracious, and loving God we have!
Be of good courage. Exercise that tiny bit of mustard seed faith we have and we will see what miracles come… Amen and God bless you all today, we love you and God loves you so much!

What is in Your Hand?

When Jesus knocks at the door of your heart, and you give your life to Him and let Him in, because He resides in you, you are now in God’s will! That simple. God wants to protect us from perishing eternally. That is why He gave us His son, so we should not perish if we believe on Him. It is that simple. That is God’s will for our life. Just believing on him.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Then the purpose is another thing. After we accepted Jesus Christ, then we want to know what our purpose in life is. We find our purpose this way – we are probably in God’s purpose now but we don’t realize it. There is an example for us today, from Moses’ story in the Bible…

God had chosen Moses to deliver God’s people from Pharaoh. They were slaves of Pharaoh. Moses was standing depressed before God, because he did not know how to deliver the people from Pharaoh and God spoke to Moses. He said to him, “What is in your hand?” and Moses said “I have a walking stick.” God said to throw it on the ground, and it became a snake! Then God said to pick it up by the tail. And when Moses did that, it became a stick again!

I was listening to a story by an archaeologist who was chasing all around the world, looking for Moses’ grave to find the magic stick! Anyway, he ended up in a museum in England and there is a stick there! It is 5 feet 3 inches long and black varnished! He was not allowed to touch it. But we know that the power was not in that stick!

Anyway, coming back to Moses, God told him to head towards the Red Sea. And Pharaoh let the Israelites go. Moses was walking towards the Red Sea with the stick, with a million of God’s people down his neck behind him! When they got to the water, he could see the Egyptians in the distance – they were already coming for them! Moses, still depressed (he was a depressed sort of a fellow, and was also 80 years old), was facing the Red Sea and the enemy coming after them. So he said to God, what do I do now!? God said, “What is in your hand?” And Moses said, the stick. So God told him to take the stick and hit the water. And we know the rest of the story! The Red Sea parted, and Moses and all the Israelites went across it and into the desert!!!! Many other miracles happened there, now that Moses knew where to look for God’s power!

So the question for us today is, “What is in your hand?” I read a little book many years ago; it was called “Brother Lawrence.” He had joined the monastery to find God. And through many religious exercises and everything, he could not find his purpose in life. And one day while peeling potatoes in the kitchen, which was his job, God touched him, woke him up, and he said that he realized that his purpose in life was what was in his hands – peeling potatoes!! All the other priests and others in the monastery wondered why he was so happy! He had had a revelation from God that what he was doing with his hands was his purpose in life. Now maybe that doesn’t sound too exciting for many of us – what is in our hands? Now today, you may say, well, my life isn’t that important “just” changing baby diapers for example or you could be a big time CEO of a big company, unfulfilled in life – or whatever other form of labors we may be doing – we know though that every president or king’s mother once changing their kids’ diaper did not know at that time what God was up to and what plans He had for that son or daughter – because God always has a plan for your life, with whatever you have in your hand.

We learn from the lesson today in Moses’ story and Brother Lawrence, that the key with God is usually “what is in your hand.” There is nothing wrong with doing other great things, but I remember when I first became a Christian, under the suggestions of many good hearted preachers and leaders, to go out into the world and do great things, I wanted to pack my suitcase and head out! But, I soon realized my purpose in life was most of the time what was in my hand, meaning what am I doing at the moment? At that moment I was working as a carpenter with carpenter tools and raising a family.

Lacking understanding where God’s power and purpose is, we are wise to do what Moses did! Our encouragement comes from God – because all power and strength and the ability to move forward comes from Him.

So today, if any one of us are thinking this life is pretty boring, “peeling potatoes” or whatever, we know we are not there by accident! Moses was 80 and he delivered his people! It was all a God effort! We learn today that it was all a supernatural doing of God! Because the stick itself had no power in it! Even though that archaeologist I mentioned believed that! So, if we find ourselves today in a situation which is less than exciting, think again about Moses’ situation! God may just be in it!

God loves you very, very much.
