My Secret to Staying Sober

My 89th birthday is in this month of November.  I was thinking back, to when I was 33 years old, and I quit drinking alcohol.  It was a “white knuckle” experience for me.  AA is very, very good for many people, but it was not the answer for me.  I was possessed by an angry drinking demon!  During this angry period, I was wallowing in self-pity and depression as I had lost all my “fun” friends and there were no more parties for me.  I was hardly fit to live with my poor angel wife.  During this time, to let the steam out of me somehow, I worked very hard by tearing down the old house we lived in and rebuilt it into a whole new house with a suite and everything.  But when that build came to an end, the mad demons controlling me were agitating me even more than ever.  Building that house had been an “out” for me, and now I had run myself out of answers…  I was not drinking, but I wanted to, but every part of me cried to; I was desperate.

When I say desperate, I mean it…  I was not a religious guy EVER but I actually found myself crying out to the Lord, who I didn’t know, but I was so angry and sick and cried to Him for help.  Now, I can sure understand how drug addicts struggle with relapses, but I was lucky, and blessed, because one day, I was watching TV and a preacher named Billy Graham was on, and started talking.  He came out with the most ridiculous statement I could imagine, that “Jesus Christ is God.”  This was completely foreign to me because “Jesus Christ” was quite a popular swear word amongst me and my friends!  And Billy was saying, simply, to just ask this Jesus to be your friend.  Simply that!  So, I took that step, and I did!  I had nothing to lose.  And guess what?  Jesus has been my best friend ever since that day.

It is Not a Religion.

It is Simply a Relationship with God, and the best friend I ever had.  This best friend has kept me sober since I gave my heart to Him; and that was over 55 years ago.  No more effort, no more white-knuckling it; and I also noticed that at that time when the demon of drink left me and I was delivered, also other vices and addictions left with it!  The Deliverance that comes from the Holy Spirit, I found brings peace, contentment, joy, gladness, hope, and, it is FREE.

So today, this best friend you could ever have, is knocking at your door, ringing the doorbell, answer it, and Let Him in… God bless you so much, He loves you so much, and I love you.  Be encouraged and have a good heart today, because Jesus’s own words say in John 8:36, “whom the Son sets free, will be free indeed.”  Let that be for you or any that you are praying for and are on your heart today; I am no different from anyone needing help; He will hear your cry like He did mine    “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles” Psalm 34:6.

A Christmas Song

Been watching television this morning, and I was gladly reminded again of my own journey as I watched Rev. Billy Graham’s funeral. I remember the part he played in my life, when I saw him on television when I was in my late 30’s. At that time, I had had quite a few emergencies and troubles, where I needed a Saviour. I grew up in a religion where I heard about Jesus a lot. But I did not pay attention too much or had interest in Him in my life. But nearing the 1970’s I was troubled and disturbed in my life. One day, I happened to watch the after dinner news on TV, and after that, Billy Graham came on. And he came right out and said that Jesus Christ was God, and He and the Father were one, and if you would just believe, you would have eternal life! I had never heard that before. Maybe I had heard it, but never, never the way I heard it there that night. I must say that changed my life forever. I learned too that joining with other people that have the same views is important and reinforces your faith. I remember that day after hearing all this good news from Billy, I didn’t know where I could meet with other people with the same understanding. So I went to a couple of churches and on a nice July Sunday morning I ended up in another one, and they all were clapping and singing “Oh Come Let Us Adore Him”, the whole congregation at the top of their voices! I thought these people must have seen something, because this was a Christmas song sung in the middle of July! But was I ever right! They were actually enjoying and rejoicing in Jesus!

I am now nearing 90, and that truth has not changed one bit. I have enjoyed my life following and hearing this good news and I am more convinced now than ever. Something great was said there today at Billy Graham’s funeral – and it goes like this – apparently he himself said, “all I am doing is changing my address”! That is my view on it all as well. It will be face to face with Jesus for me, and a change of address.

So today, if you feel Jesus knocking at the door of your heart, I say let Him in, because I found that without Jesus, you don’t have anything. Without Jesus, you don’t have anything. But WITH Jesus, you have EVERYthing! Yes, With Jesus, you have everything! The Bible is very important; it has all the promises that He offers and that is where you know and understand Him. Because Jesus says in John 14:9 – “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” So, as He comes into your heart, enjoy Him today, because He loves you very, very, very much!!

The Saviour Came In

When I was a teenager at home, I used to help my dad in his work, with lumber and logging. A big family always had need of finances. So I would work for him for nothing, and I lived at home. Dad was the kind of a man who had never gone to school, couldn’t read or write, and was the type of a guy who went to bed early and got up early, and in a good mood in the morning. But he was very sensitive and could read my mind. I had managed to buy an old car, an old Dodge, and I would leave after supper with it, pick up some of my friends, and we would be gallivanting all night, and we would talk, laugh, do all kinds of things, chase girls. Next thing you know I would come home early in the morning, bleary-eyed, and Dad was up already making and eating breakfast for himself and me, and ready for work. Although I was sleepy, and hadn’t slept a wink all night, and had red eyes, and was tired, there was no excuse for him; we went to work. I remember one time, and on different occasions, we would go in the car and Dad would say to me, “I really like you, you are a hard worker and you help out with the family, But – I cannot understand why you can’t do it right!” Of course, at that age, it was in one ear and out the other. But many years later, that question would ring in my ears. I couldn’t figure it out why I was so powerless to do anything right, in my heart, that is. Then later on in life, when Jesus knocked at the door of my heart and I let Him in, my whole view and ways and ideas of doing it “right” or “wrong” came into view. And that is because when we do this, the Holy Spirit, who is a Person, and He is all powerful, can begin to operate in your life. There are many sayings for that, like Let your light shine, He lit your candle, whatever it is, but the Light switch was turned on! And the desire in my heart was to do things right. A new life came into me and it just changed the desire of my heart, the way to do things and to approach life. What a day that was for me! When I saw the love that He had for me, then it gave me the ability and the power to love life and others as I couldn’t do on my own.
Now 65 years later, that question my dad asked is still answered when I read this scripture: In Titus 3, 3-7: “3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”
Today as He knocks at the door of your heart, my prayer is that the blessing and eternal life of Jesus would come to you through the power of the Holy Spirit, as you receive Him today. God bless you, He loves you, we love you,

God’s Mercy Towards Us

A few years ago I was walking my usual walk 20 minutes down for a coffee, on a hot day. Halfways down there was sort of a little sitting place where a bench was in the shade under a tree. I decided to sit on the bench for a rest. Then comes this older fella, I would say in his late 60’s, and he sat at the other end of the bench and lit up a cigarette and he began puffing, but because I was sitting downwind from him, I decided I should get up and go and sit between him and the breeze. So he moved over; he was very gentle and polite. And I told him, “Thank you, God bless you,” and I guess that sort of opened up a conversation. This man told me that he lived alone, raising his three sons. Now, his three sons were giving him much difficulty; it sounded like one was making drugs, the other one selling them, and the other guy taking them. And he was quite disturbed with all that, and was wanting to try to correct them and help them out of it. Now this man had never been a religious man all of his life. Although when his kids were little, he had dedicated them to the Lord somewhere in a church in the Prairies. But now as his children were older, they seemed not to be anymore interested in Jesus or any of that, and the Dad was really sad and struggling to find a way to get them out of the drug scene. A wonderful thing though, was not that long before I met with him on the bench in the park, only a year or two ago, he told me that he himself had had an encounter with Jesus! Now this guy was in his late 60’s when he discovered the grace of God. But he was struggling with his own children with the situation they were in. And he was worried, and it was naturally pretty difficult to handle. He was asking me advice but I realized a long time ago that God’s clock is not our clock. And because God is a God of mercy and grace, He will know when and how to touch people. Anyway, I had no real answer for him for what to do with his children, because there was really no answer. Because God’s timing is not our timing. Worry does not get us anywhere; it is simply our faith that we have that we believe God is at work in their lives. There is a scripture, in Proverbs 22:6 that says “Teach a child the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” It sounds like he had done that with his children when they were young, but still the damage, pain and tough reality they were going through were very difficult for him. Anyway, he asked me to pray for him and all this and we did pray together and I tried to encourage him in these things, and not to lose hope, but to remember the scripture and have faith, that in God’s time, he would see miracles and mercy and grace in his family.
We need to remind ourselves when we have children and loved ones who are not doing well, and we have concerns or fears, that us worrying will not help. The Bible says “do not worry” and that “…He gives to His beloved even in their sleep” Psalm 127:2b. We can be at peace, and rest, knowing that God’s time is perfect, even though it is not our timetable! Through all this, we can remember that God is a God of mercy, of grace, and even though your kids don’t remember what they said or promised when little, God has a big computer and records everything. We need to rest assured that He loves us very much and also our children, and our children’s children and the generations down the line! There are no limits to God’s love!
So this day, if you have children and loved ones who don’t seem to be on the right path, as we understand it, remember God has a different view of the whole thing. Because He sees the beginning from the end, and every person is created in His image. We do not limit Him and His ways to our own understanding. His Love is vast. He doesn’t leave anyone behind. He is faithful and will do it.
Enjoy your family, love them as He loves you, because God loves you very, very much!
Today, when Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart, let Him in, and enjoy Him!

Children of a King

I have a brother who I care for who is in a facility, who now needs more care. The other night I got a phone call from the home he was in, and in talking with them, the doctors would like him to be placed in another facility where there would be more suitable care. The only problem they had was the waiting list was between six months and a year to get into a care home like that on the North Shore! But that was the plan. So amongst ourselves, we decided we would wait. The next morning, the phone rang and this lady called me from a care home, and said to me “We have a bed that came available this morning, a room; would you be interested in this for your brother?” I said, “Certainly!” Then she said, “Well we will put that in motion right away.” I asked her where it was and she said it is on the North Shore where you live, and it is not far from where he is now! Then I sat on the edge of the bed and I had a conversation with the Lord. Of course, I was just about apologetic because I had not yet thought or prayed about that situation! And I said to Him, “I did not even pray about this!” That is when He began to speak to me about how we are not “beggars” of God, but we are “Children of the King”! My brother, myself, and all those who believe on Him… and He then reminded me that we were on His Mind before the creation of the whole universe! And that He runs the universe! And that he is in charge of everything! And the key was not to talk to God about our problem, but to talk to our problem about how big and great God is! And I was reminded of that scripture which says:
“My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, (God)! How vast is the sum of them!” Psalm 139:15-17
This has to be the best news of all! Our prayer is and should be “Thank you, thank you, thank you.” God loves grateful hearts. He is the creator of the universe and operates and runs it for our well being. I am not opposed to prayers but I was thinking, if we are children of the King, I guess it means we are not adults yet. Little children, when they have needs, don’t always tell us what they want. But a loving parent instinctively know their children’s needs. So according to some of these scriptures and what God says in His word, we can be excited and grateful that He is on Watch at all times! We have a Loving Father who always wants the best for us! That is, our well being here, and eternal life in the end. John 10:10 says “…I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” Meaning here and eternally!
So today, as Jesus knocks at the door of our heart, let Him in and enjoy Him! He loves us very, very, very much! We say with grateful hearts today, “Thank you Jesus” and we can speak to our problems about how GREAT of a God we have! Amen.

Late… But Always on Time

Many times we as people, we have loved ones who have problems and we are praying that they can be free of them but it doesn’t happen. I think of parents who have kids who are lost, maybe incarcerated, stuck in drugs or other things and nothing is happening – and Jesus just doesn’t seem to be around. They are praying and He doesn’t seem to show up. Well, because God’s time is not our time! Our time is not the same as God’s time. Being “late” is no problem for Him.
A little bit of an example here from the Bible – Jesus’s great friends were Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Lazarus had died, and the sisters were very depressed that Jesus didn’t show up when he was sick. And He only appeared 4 days later! And then they told him that it was “too late”; he was dead. Jesus asked them where the grave was. Everyone was crying because their good friend and brother had died. He looked to heaven and cried Himself. Then the story goes on to say that He rolled the stone away, called his name, and raised Lazarus from the dead. And the people were rejoicing!
People have told me that only if they saw Jesus in person, they would believe Him. But the scripture says in John 20:29 – Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
And in Isaiah 40:31 – “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
SO we see from all this that it is by faith. Jesus was 4 days late; those people, his friends needed a strong faith, but they were with Jesus. Yet we trust and believe… And our faith is increased!
We have many needs; businesses fail, commitments don’t add up, disappointments in life, people are sick for years, relationships break up, and we can’t seem to find God… but His time is not our time!
Therefore today, as we let Jesus into our hearts, as we accept Him as our Lord, Saviour, and Redeemer, He is more than willing as we exercise our faith by believing in Him to bring the right things into our lives at the right time.
Our hope is that in God’s time, He will roll the stone away like He did for Lazarus!! And He will call our name…

Forgiveness, the Key to the Peace that Passes all Understanding

Forgiveness is always an antidote to poisoning. Unforgiveness is poison. Forgiveness is the antidote.
In the Depression of the 1920s and 30s, there lived a family in the South, with five children. They were very, very poor. They picked cotton to make a living. The conditions were: No sanitation, no power, no electricity and all that. No education. The eldest son, being a 20-year-old at that time, had to donate all his earnings, whatever they were, every penny, to his parents, to help feed the family. One day while resentment was building up inside of him, he told his parents he was leaving for the “big city.” When that young man got into the city, he saw all the different lifestyles of education, riches etc. He made friends with a rich family who helped him with some education, and he became involved in a business and was quite successful in it. The young man did not stay in touch with his parents. By this time, his resentment had grown stronger towards them because of all the possibilities and availabilities that he saw there were in the city! He could not get out of his mind why his parents had not given him what these parents of his friends had given their kids. That is what he was mad at. So, he continued on, got married, had a family of his own, and tried to put all his past in the back of his mind as best as he could.
Many years later, while his parents were still alive and old, the resentment came to a boiling point in his life. He decided that he should drive over there to them and really “straighten them out” about the failures they had with him and the family. He was gonna tell them off. The first night on the way there, he stayed in a hotel and God began to speak to Him a couple of words. By the way, this guy was not a religious guy by any means. And the conversation from God was: “What would you have done better than they if you were in that same position?” With that, the young guy had a change of heart. He turned around from his trip and did not go tell his parents off, but went back to his home. The beauty of it, was the Peace of God washed over him when he had that change of heart… he said it was the Peace that passes all understanding and he could not figure it out!! Well, the long story short is this – that this man got in touch with his parents and made everything right. Now, this man had been struck with a disease of some kind, a terminal disease. Also his wife had a disease. They even had a daughter who was disabled. But through all this, the Peace of God was in him, and made a great change in his family. And the relationship changed between him and his parents! This man passed away two years later, but on his deathbed, he kept relating the power of God in his life through forgiveness. And his wife lived many more years and she was the one that tells the story. But God changed the whole thing!
So, the key was one act, he said, it was getting rid of resentment through forgiveness.
In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus says: “Forgive us our debts as we forgive others.” The key to that is because we are first forgiven ourselves, then we are able to forgive others as He has forgiven us. In accepting Jesus Christ as our saviour, we see how much He has forgiven us, then we are able to forgive others because He has first forgiven us! When we discover the grace of God, how much He forgave us, then we are able to get rid of our resentments through forgiving others.
On our own power and effort, we cannot forgive anything, but when we hear Jesus’s voice (that is what this fellow did – he heard Jesus’s voice) we accept His forgiveness which gets rid of resentment and gives us the power and ability and grace to forgive others. Out of that, the Grace of God gives us the Peace that passes all understanding – we will not explain that one, we can’t!
Today, as He knocks at the door of your heart, let Him in… Let Him speak to you. Have conversation with Him. He will do miracles. God bless you, He is FOR you! He loves you very, very much.

Jesus, Our Friend

In the 1700’s in England, during a time of economic depression, a single mom and her 20-year-old only son were really struggling to make a living. So the son heard about America and said to his mom, “Mom I am going to go down there and find some riches to help you out.” When this son was in America, he and his mom used to write letters back and forth to each other. He could not find any work of any kind. It was a new country and it was depressed as well. He was lonely and wanted to go back home. Then in one of the letters the mom wrote to him, she said she had found strength in Jesus. And in the letter, she wrote to him, “What a friend I have in Jesus, all my sins and griefs to bear, and what a privilege it is to carry everything to him in prayer.” She said she was very happy now and not lonely anymore! The burden had been lifted. It changed her whole heart. When the son got the letter from his mom, he read that and was humming these words under his breath as he walked around looking for work, and out of it all, God touched him! He became a believer in Jesus! And what happened is he put those words to a song! And it has been sung for years and still is sung around the world today, “What a Friend I Have in Jesus”. He saw the light, the guy!
Jesus knocked at the door of his heart and he let Him in, and discovered he had a Friend forever.
Jesus said after His resurrection and He left for heaven, to His disciples, that He would send another, the Person of the Holy Spirit, which is part of it all when you accept Jesus. Jesus said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth… But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.(John 14: 16,18). He will come and dwell in you. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries us through life. Part of His work in our lives is He is our guide, He empowers us, He reveals things to us, and He is our teacher, our advocate, our counsellor, and is our comforter.
Believe it today, enjoy it, may God bless you!

A Merry Heart

I remember many years ago before I let Jesus into my heart, when He knocked at the door, I did not have a clue what life was about. I remember working with a newly married guy. He came to work one morning and he says to me, being quite frustrated, and I was an older person than him, being married a while, “can I have some advice.” While I think of it now, I did not have any concerning marriage! Apparently he had got up in the morning and he was quite a positive guy, and he thought it was a great day, and he told me that he said out loud, “Good morning!” And his wife said, “what is good about it?” He was upset all day about that. He was a cheerful, happy-go-lucky type of a fella. He was always saying, “this is a great day” and his wife would be upset with him and say “what is so great about it?” Even though I had been married a few years more than him, I was not an expert! But, knowing what I know today, unless we know how much the Lord loves us and the sacrifice He did for us at the Cross, we really cannot view too well many of life’s situations. I have come to find out that Jesus talked about this a lot! One place is where it is said “In (the midst of) everything give thanks, for this is the will of God concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:18.

“In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God concerning you”. Notice here, that this scripture speaks about God’s will in our lives – many of us have questions, what is God’s will for our lives?” It is quite simple, it starts right there in that scripture.

Another good word is “A merry heart does good like a medicine.” Prov.17:22.

And this one… “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Prov.15:13.

We can understand from that that God speaks about the heart a lot. So it is not a little thing when we say Jesus is standing at the Door of our Heart and to let Him in! Because life is in the heart! All life springs out of the heart. Once that is right, I find that life is much easier.

After 47 years of experiencing some of these benefits and having seen other people experiencing the same life, I come to the conclusion that the indwelling Spirit of God is a major key to a cheerful heart in my life. The key for me has been in these 47 years has been the presence of the Spirit of God in my heart.

As He knocks on the door of your heart at this moment, let Him in and I believe together with you, that the peace and mercies and blessings of the Lord will strengthen you and encourage you as you enjoy His purpose and will in your lives!

We love you. God bless you. God loves you very, very much.
