The Free Gift Within

In the 1700’s in England, during a time of economic depression, a single mom and her 20-year-old only son were really struggling to make a living. So the son heard about America and said to his mom, “Mom, I am going to go down there and find some riches to help you out.” When this son was in America, he and his mom used to write letters back and forth to each other. He could not find any work of any kind. It was a new country and it was depressed as well. He was lonely and wanted to go back home. Then in one of the letters the mom wrote to him, she said she had found strength in Jesus. And in the letter, she wrote to him, “What a friend I have in Jesus, all my sins and griefs to bear, and what a privilege it is to carry everything to Him in prayer.” She said she was very happy now and not lonely anymore! The burden had been lifted. It changed her whole heart. When the son got the letter from his mom, he read that and was humming these words under his breath as he walked around looking for work, and out of it all, God touched him! He became a believer in Jesus! And what happened is he put those words to a song! And it has been sung for years and still is sung around the world today, “What a Friend I Have in Jesus”. He saw the light, the guy!
Jesus knocked at the door of his heart and he let Him in, and discovered he had a Friend forever. When He knocks at the door of our hearts, and we have let Him in, He is locked and sealed within us, forever.

After His resurrection, when He left for heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father, Jesus said to His disciples that He would send another, the Person of the Holy Spirit, which is the Third Person of the Trinity. Jesus said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth… But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” (John 14: 16,18). He will come and dwell in you. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries us through life. Part of His work in our lives is He is our guide, He empowers us, He reveals things to us, and He is our teacher, our advocate, our counsellor, and is our wonderful comforter.

In the midst of all this, gifted to us is a new prayer language, which is the evidence that we have received the blessing of the Holy Spirit.
We then have received the ability to speak to God, our needs and problems and our joys, everything, in a new way, an extra way. This reinforces our faith that we have the evidence, that His power and gifts are within us. And He enables us to continue our walk with Him.

Believe it today, enjoy it, open it up and use the Gift, God will bless you, and we bless you. He loves you very, very, very, very much!!

A Christmas Song

Been watching television this morning, and I was gladly reminded again of my own journey as I watched Rev. Billy Graham’s funeral. I remember the part he played in my life, when I saw him on television when I was in my late 30’s. At that time, I had had quite a few emergencies and troubles, where I needed a Saviour. I grew up in a religion where I heard about Jesus a lot. But I did not pay attention too much or had interest in Him in my life. But nearing the 1970’s I was troubled and disturbed in my life. One day, I happened to watch the after dinner news on TV, and after that, Billy Graham came on. And he came right out and said that Jesus Christ was God, and He and the Father were one, and if you would just believe, you would have eternal life! I had never heard that before. Maybe I had heard it, but never, never the way I heard it there that night. I must say that changed my life forever. I learned too that joining with other people that have the same views is important and reinforces your faith. I remember that day after hearing all this good news from Billy, I didn’t know where I could meet with other people with the same understanding. So I went to a couple of churches and on a nice July Sunday morning I ended up in another one, and they all were clapping and singing “Oh Come Let Us Adore Him”, the whole congregation at the top of their voices! I thought these people must have seen something, because this was a Christmas song sung in the middle of July! But was I ever right! They were actually enjoying and rejoicing in Jesus!

I am now nearing 90, and that truth has not changed one bit. I have enjoyed my life following and hearing this good news and I am more convinced now than ever. Something great was said there today at Billy Graham’s funeral – and it goes like this – apparently he himself said, “all I am doing is changing my address”! That is my view on it all as well. It will be face to face with Jesus for me, and a change of address.

So today, if you feel Jesus knocking at the door of your heart, I say let Him in, because I found that without Jesus, you don’t have anything. Without Jesus, you don’t have anything. But WITH Jesus, you have EVERYthing! Yes, With Jesus, you have everything! The Bible is very important; it has all the promises that He offers and that is where you know and understand Him. Because Jesus says in John 14:9 – “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” So, as He comes into your heart, enjoy Him today, because He loves you very, very, very much!!

A Remembrance Day Memory

Remembrance Day is special to me, as it is is to honour and remember all those who have and do serve. I honour today one special serviceman I grew up with when I was young. When I was going to school when the the war broke out, we had a friend who was old enough to join in the service. He was from a fairly well to do family. He was a teenager but wasn’t happy with life too much. Anyway he went to the big city one day and joined the air force. They trained him for a while in the air force as a tail gunner in a bomber plane. A tail gunner’s job was to sit in the back turret with a machine gun. There was no passage from the back of the plane where the turret was, to the front where the pilot was. So he was alone in there, locked in. When they were flying over Germany during the war, they had to crash land into a field. When they crash-landed, the turret part separated from the rest of the plane, and my friend was left alone in the field about a mile from the pilot, standing by the turret himself, alone. So later on, when he was telling us the story, the worst two things that bothered him during the war were – first, there were woman working in the field with pitchforks, I guess all the men were in the army in Germany and the women were left working the fields, so the ladies held him prisoner at bay with their pitchforks in the field, until the German army came to pick him up. He said he was so relieved when he saw the German guards and soldiers come with the jeep and guns. They had seen the plane crash, and they came to pick him up. He felt safer with them, rather than being alone with the workers with pitchforks! He told us he was never so scared in his life, and he was actually relieved to go be a prisoner when the guards took him away to prison. The second thing that bothered my friend the most, while he was a prisoner for 5 years during the war, was that there was no soap! So he came home after 5 years in Germany being a POW and he was a very grateful man, that he had all the soap he could use! This veteran never fired a shot, never hurt anyone, but said he really learned a lesson during serving: that Life is all about being grateful, for even a bar of soap, which he didn’t have for five years! The lesson my friend taught us was to be grateful to God for whatever you have. I was so impressed with this veteran, that he was so grateful and appreciative for everything in his life, even with all the things he went through. As a young man myself, I was impressed with the lesson this fellow shared and the gratefulness he had and I learned from that! I have never forgotten him. He had a true, grateful heart all the rest of his life. He passed away peacefully in his 90s living a long, happy life.

We are grateful today for all our veterans, past and present. We thank God for their commitment and their services that brings us into a country of freedom.

God bless you all this weekend.

The Deliverer

Many of us parents, grandparents, other relatives, and friends agonize, have sleepless nights, and worry and search for answers over the fact that some of our loved ones have been caught up in addictions, homelessness, depression, and other desolations. We struggle to assist them in whatever ways we can, and using all our human forces and strength, and our prayers, that they would get off the addictions that they are caught up into. It could be sexual, drugs, alcohol, anything that our loved ones are caught up in and cannot find deliverance, healing and freedom from all these shackles that torture their minds and bodies. We genuinely pray (as we should and it is good) as we bring all our efforts towards getting rid of these problems for them, and we do everything we possibly can for them, sacrifice, spending our human efforts, money, support, detox, yet we can find nothing seems to work. It is not that it is wrong what we do for them, it is that they have not yet met the true Deliverer face to face! Well, the answer is in this story about a very, very troubled man in Mark 5. Jesus appeared to him, and He revealed Himself. The man met Jesus face to face and the Deliverer was revealed to him!

Here we see what happened to one person who no human could help – but Jesus did…

Mark 5: They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

I believe that the most important thing we have to do as loved ones is TRUST the Deliverer. While we trust, we can rest, and have hope. I read somewhere that while we sleep, God works, but while we work, He sleeps! That is to say that we can trust Him and be at peace with Him. After all, He is the Prince of Peace. And the scripture also says that He brings us the Peace that passes ALL understanding.

So today, as Jesus knocks at the door of our hearts, let Him in! Trust Him and enjoy Him. He will accomplish what He promises!

We love you and God loves you very, very much!

The Gospel of Hope!

In the early 1970s I had a contract in South Surrey to work on a project finishing inside houses; it was a 30 house plan. When I was working on that project, there were two brothers I worked for who were the owners of the company. One was keeping the books in the office, and the older brother was the project manager. The project manager was in his early 50s. He was always on the project, no matter what time of day you were there; he would direct you to park your truck over here, or unload your material over there. He was very attentive and smart. He and his wife had a nice family of four teenaged kids. I came to work one morning on the job and it was very, very quiet there, because he was usually in the middle of the road directing you! There were police cars around his house. Anyway, I found out through the office that in the middle of the night, he had died of a heart attack. He was a nice guy and I got along good with him. I went to his funeral in a funeral home somewhere, and the preacher or speaker, got up and gave a talk for 45 minutes. The widow and the four kids were sitting in the front row, and other family members and friends were there. It was painful and depressing. The speaker never offered any hope or encouragement. So I left, shaking my head. Even the bricklayer I was walking with back to our cars, said to me, “What was that all about?” To this day, I wonder about those teenagers and the widow; I never heard anymore. I felt for them; there was no message of hope. I know one thing, that teenagers are open to hearing something new or fresh! But that did not happen there that day.

The answer to hopelessness is in the simple Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now the Gospel is very simple: Jesus came, He died, and He rose from the dead. He shed His blood, which erases our sins, past, present and future. Romans 10:9 says: “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;”

Believe on Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved. That is the Doorway to Heaven.

And John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

And there are many more good comforting words…

The answer to hopelessness has always been and will always be that a Saviour came for us, easily available, simply believe. No hard works involved. He has done it all.

So that is why we feel free today to share the Good News – there is always someone who may enjoy it and receive it!

We will never know the whole situation of that incident that day, but one thing we know for sure that the Gospel when it is shared and accepted, is a Gospel of Hope and promises, direction, and encouragement and comfort for our lives and eternally.

So today, when Jesus knocks at the door of your heart, let Him in and enjoy Him!

God loves you, very, very, very much!

The Power & Simplicity of the Gospel

Growing up in a large family during the Great Depression, I suppose many parents did not have much time to encourage their kids and spend time with them and so on, because they had many needs themselves. In my case, I developed a spirit of insecurity, and as time went by, I figured out that alcohol was a way and means of getting rid of insecurity, and giving me boldness, and other needed qualities. Anyway, I soon found out that it becomes an addiction, and very difficult to get rid of. Self-helps, self-efforts did not work for me. But later in my early 30s I finally overcame it, through my strong will and self-effort. During that time though, your strength weakens and it became very difficult. There were programs that I tried, to find the meaning of God’s help in there. I did not identify with none of them.

And one day, through desperation, I called upon the Lord, which I did not know, and asked Him to help me. Watching television one evening during that time, Billy Graham was on. I had heard his name, but did not know much about what he was talking about. Then he comes on with the saying, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.” First of all, in the realm I lived in, the word “Jesus Christ” was nothing but a swear word! We all used it. It was a big part of our vocabulary. And Jesus Christ was nothing but a good hippie, gone back 2000 years ago, we knew that. Billy was talking about faith as well, which I did not have. But apparently we all have a little bit of faith, enough to get us started. So I thought, well, he was talking about the Bible which was another thing that I did not believe at all!! Ancient writings by somebody we didn’t know, nor did we care about! Yet, I asked my wife to go buy me a Bible! She went and bought one at Eaton’s for me! As I started to read little bits of it, it began to make sense! And now I believe where it says “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing the word of God.” When I look at that, I see what happened there… Billy Graham was preaching the word of God and when I started reading the Bible, I was reading the Word of God! This is the Power of the Gospel. The little bit of faith I had, which was minor, and to put my own thoughts and ideas aside, and began to look at something else than my own efforts.

Well, this is history, almost 50 years ago, I call it the Simplicity and the Power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Because of that, I found new life came into me, excitement about it, and wanting to tell others about it, and enjoying the presence of the Holy Spirit that came to reside in me at that time. I think when God calls us “His children”, there is a reason behind that. He never calls us “His adults”. So to me, that is the simplicity – as a child you are able to trust. That is what makes it work. That is what gives us power to have, in my case, no interest in alcohol or drugs for security, boldness, and all these other qualities that goes with it, to help me through life.

I just want to share a scripture in here. It simply states, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved, and your household also.” And another scripture says, “Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” These are heavy-duty promises, simple, but powerful. You can ask yourself, saved from what? You are saved from Fear, Guilt, Condemnation, Insecurity, and many other lacks.

In the Book of Acts, chapter 16, St. Paul as we all know and have heard of, was on his way to Philippi, and when he arrived there, it says, he went along the river where they used to have prayer meetings. When he was there, there was a woman who was a fortune teller or diviner, who kept bugging him. Finally he got fed up, and St. Paul realized she had a demon in her, and he commanded that demon to leave her alone. So immediately she got saved, and got water baptized right in that river. And the guy that was making his living off her business, realized he could not make a living off of her anymore, so he dragged St. Paul to town before the magistrate, where he was flogged and put in prison. He was locked into the prison in chains, with other prisoners there. And a retired army captain who the Romans put in charge of those prisons in those days was there. The story says that while St. Paul and his friend were singing praises to the Lord at midnight, an earthquake happened. The retired Roman army guard was asleep on his chair. He was awakened and he thought all the prisoners had escaped and it would be “off with his head” – so he took his sword and was going to commit suicide. But St. Paul shouted at him, don’t do that! He called him over and St. Paul said, “we are all here, nobody escaped!!!” So the fearful guard called for a light, and on his knees, came up to St. Paul and said “what must I do to be saved?” St. Paul simply told him, “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved and your household also.” Not too many details here, but the guard took St. Paul to his house, cleaned him up, and he and his household were baptized, all believing in Jesus Christ! (by the way, You don’t need to be baptized to be saved, it’s got nothing to do with it. The Jews of that day, part of their religion was baptizing people. We see that with John the Baptist who was baptizing Jews.)

Now this is what we see as the Power & Simplicity of the Gospel!!

This is the beginning of a brand-new life, which is made up of the Mercy, the Grace, and the Abundant life there is in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour! It includes Eternal life to boot! Because the scripture says in John 10:10 “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance.”

Simple, yes. Simplicity, yes. But Powerful!!! Behind that is all the Lord that created all the universe and everything in it! As He is knocking at the door of your heart, let Him in! Enjoy Him, talk to Him. Listen to Him, and thank Him. He has done it all folks!

God bless you, and He loves you very very much,

A Schoolboy’s Life Lesson

In about 1907, nine-year-old Norman was attending a country school, with approximately 35 students. The teacher, being a heavyset gentleman with a roar of a voice, before school quitting time, stood up and went to the blackboard and bellowed to his class, the word “SILENCE”! with his booming voice. Of course everybody went quiet! Then he said to them, “Your homework for tonight will be…” Then he wrote on the chalkboard the words “I CAN’T”. Then he took the chalkboard eraser and barred off the apostrophe and the “T”. And he wrote, “I CAN… do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” That was the homework for the night! Well, that statement was imprinted on that young boy’s mind, which he never lost and it guided his life throughout his 9 decades. He became a very positive-minded individual. He wrote best-selling books and magazines, and he was in high demand to give speeches in conferences and other places to thousands of schoolteachers, bankers, lawyers, salesmen, real estate people, industrialists, and so on. He was a man of great influence. He was very positive in his speeches, being inspired all the rest of his life by that very statement he heard as a schoolboy.
May these words be an encouragement to any of us for direction and hope. God bless you! He loves you very, very much!!
